The concept for this project was to refurbish the outer envelope of the building, which was still in reasonably good condition and insert a new timber multi-purpose volume that houses the kitchen bathroom and fold-out bed, as well as a second double bed on a platform. This modular approach, in line with the modular nature of the Case Cantoniere, could be assembled as prefabricated element of site and craned into position in the new building. A contemporary functional kit of parts that can re-purpose these small historic buildings.

This project concerned the reinvention of an abandoned ‘Casa Cantoniera’, small buildings all characterized by the typical red colour and often the same design, that were historically used by maintenance workers of Italian roads, in this case the Strada Provinciale n.32.
